Gaswerk Music Residencies

Since 2023, Gaswerksiedlung Berlin has been deeply committed to championing African and diaspora artists, fostering a space where African culture is celebrated and nurtured. In 2025, this effort is taken a step further with the launch of an ongoing music residency program in collaboration with Nyege Nyege Festival and the artists of the label’s roster. Starting in April 2025 with Singeli scene representatives Sisso and Maiko, followed by Afrorack – pioneer of African modular synthesis – the program continued with HHY & The Kampala Unit and Arsenal Mikebe.

These residencies culminated in new collaborations with local artists and new live materials, with performances slated for Gaswerk’s concert location Block1, Studio 1111’s program, Gaswerk Music Days festival in July, and Nyege Nyege Festival in November.

The partnership extended throughout the year, with each residency concluding in showcases at BLOCK1 and Studio 1111. Sisso and Maiko’s collaboration with Gaswerk artists Thomash and Saeko Killy was showcased at BLOCK1 on April 24th. The outputs of the second residency – with Afrorack, Halosaur, and Nicholas Morrish – were presented at BLOCK1 on May 16th; while the creative results of the third round – with HHY & The Kampala Unit, Dylan Hunter Chee Greene, Till Künkler were showcased at Studio 1111 on May 22nd. The last residency combined the efforts of Arsenal Mikebe, UnoX, Hal Strewe (Cassette Head Sessions), and again Dylan Hunter Chee Greene, and its results found a stage directly at our festival on July 12th, alongside other guests from the residency program.
